The climbing of Cerro Cherripo!!
Eddie, Carl and I arrived in the the small town of San Gerrado, 3/02/11. We went to the office to buy the tickets that would let us enter the park where the climb starts and more importantly give us a bed to sleep in at the base! But this office only have 10 tickets every day for the next day and since they go by the concept "Show first, serve first" there were no tickets left for the next day! So he told us to be at the gate of the office the next morning at 5 am, that way we would be sure to get our ticket, so there we were the next morning all tired but excited! We got our tickets and then had a day of getting ready for the big trip! We went on a litlle "warm up hike" to the owner of our hostels farm! Later at night we went up to "the hotsprings", we made our way through thick forrest over rivers very excited for this hotspring, to our surprise and amusement we ended up at some guys blue teil pool - probably heated with electricity! But oh well, the view was nice and the warm water felt good! We watched the clouds come in and cover up the mountains! On the way down it had become dark out and all of a sudden the sky lit up in a million different places by costa rican lightning bugs! It looked like a little tiny car because of the two dots that lit up in the front! We stocked up on food and supplies, from the little shop in town, for our big hike the next day! At 6 am we set out, we started a 14,5 km hike to the basecamp, starting at around 1500 - final destination 3820m!!! The hike was steep, but we were going at a good pace! We passed many different types of forrests and the sun coming in over the mountains! We got to half point at 7km 1000 up, about 1000m and 7,5km more to go!! We took a rest, tired and positive, before setting out for the second part! We reached the 10km point and the altitude started kicking in, i suddenly got very dissy and tired!!! I struggled to keep positive, but with help from my two amazing fellow climbers i never lost faith - completely! As we went further up, it seemed impossible to get my body to move, and Eddie and Carl took all my stuff out of my backpack and carried it for me, i dont know how i wouldve made it without them!!!! Keeping my focus on putting one foot infront of the other, i got there - slowly but successful!!! When we saw the hostel in the distance a new engergy kicked in and we almost ran for it!!! I, exhausted to a point i didnt knew excited, went straight to bed for a nap. Eddie and Carl went for a little hike to see the sunset, i must say i admire and am very impressed by their engergy and strenght! That night we had pasta, we started to boil the water - all of us, with every piece of clothe we had with us on, sat on a row and looked at the pot with water in that just wouldnt boil! After 1 hour of obsessive starring at the water it boiled, and we had the most amazing pasta ever!!! We all went to bed, exhausted!!! Next morning at 3am we set out for the last 5km stretch to the very top of the mountain! After 1,5km my body wouldnt let me move 1 cm more, and so i stopped! The guys went on, again i am impressed!! I sat and watched the sky filled with stars and saw 4 shooting stars in just half an hour! We had delisious oatmeal with apple for breakfast and then we started the hike down! It went much faster, but the last 2km down my whole entire body was hurting and my legs were like jelly! At last we reached the hostel, and a hot shower and a warm bed had never been so amazing!!! Tired and proud i went to bed!
